Preserve the beauty and longevity of your handcrafted garments with proper care.
General Care Tips
- Always check the care label on your garment before cleaning
- Store garments in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Use breathable cotton or muslin cloth for wrapping, avoid plastic
- Air out garments periodically to prevent moisture buildup
Silk Sarees
Silk is a delicate natural fiber that requires gentle care to maintain its luster and drape.
Cleaning
- Dry clean only - Professional dry cleaning is recommended
- Avoid washing at home as water can damage the fabric and embroidery
- If spot cleaning is necessary, use a soft, damp cloth with mild detergent
- Never wring or twist silk fabric
Storage
- Fold and store flat in a cotton or muslin cloth
- Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent creases
- Add silica gel packets to absorb moisture
- Keep away from perfumes, deodorants, and cosmetics
- Use neem leaves or camphor to protect from insects
Ironing
- Iron on the reverse side while the fabric is slightly damp
- Use low to medium heat setting
- Place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and silk
- Never spray water directly on silk
Banarasi & Zari Work Sarees
Banarasi sarees with zari (metallic thread) work require extra care to preserve the intricate weaving.
Cleaning
- Always dry clean - Water can tarnish the zari work
- Inform the dry cleaner about the zari work
- Clean only when absolutely necessary to preserve the metallic threads
Storage
- Wrap in soft muslin or cotton cloth (never plastic)
- Store flat to prevent stress on the zari work
- Change folds every 2-3 months
- Keep in a dry, dark place to prevent tarnishing
- Use natural moth repellents like neem or cloves
Special Care
- If zari tarnishes, gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth
- Avoid contact with perfumes, hairspray, and makeup
- Remove jewelry before wearing to prevent snagging
Cotton Sarees
Cotton is durable and easier to maintain, but still requires proper care for longevity.
Cleaning
- Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent
- For embellished cotton, dry cleaning is recommended
- Soak for 10-15 minutes, gently squeeze (don't wring)
- Rinse thoroughly in cold water
- Dry in shade, away from direct sunlight
Storage
- Ensure the saree is completely dry before storing
- Fold and store in a cotton bag or cloth
- Can be stored hanging if space permits
Ironing
- Iron while slightly damp for best results
- Use medium to high heat
- Iron on the reverse side for printed or embellished cotton
Embellished Garments (Lehengas, Gowns)
Garments with heavy embroidery, sequins, beads, or stonework need special attention.
Cleaning
- Professional dry cleaning only
- Inform the cleaner about all embellishments
- Clean only when necessary to preserve embroidery
- Spot clean minor stains with a damp cloth
Storage
- Never hang heavy lehengas - always fold and store flat
- Place tissue paper between folds to prevent creasing
- Store in a breathable garment bag
- Keep embellishments away from direct contact with other fabrics
Handling
- Handle with clean, dry hands
- Avoid pulling or tugging on embellishments
- Check for loose threads or beads before wearing
- Apply perfume and makeup before wearing the garment
Emergency Stain Removal
Oil stains: Sprinkle talcum powder or cornstarch immediately, let it absorb, then brush off gently. Dry clean as soon as possible.
Food stains: Blot (don't rub) with a clean, damp cloth. Avoid water on silk or embellished fabrics.
Makeup stains: Use a makeup remover wipe gently on the affected area (test on a hidden spot first).
⚠️ For valuable or heavily embellished garments, always consult a professional cleaner rather than attempting home remedies.
