Leheriya: The Wave of Rajasthan
Leheriya, derived from the word Leher (wave), is a tie-dye technique unique to Rajasthan. It captures the essence of the flowing desert winds and the rippling sand dunes. Traditionally worn during the monsoon month of Shravan, Leheriya has now become a global fashion statement.
At Rana’s by Kshitija, our Leheriya collection is handcrafted by skilled artisans in Jaipur. Here are 7 Popular Leheriya Patterns you need to know about.
1. The Classic Diagonal Leheriya
This is the most common pattern, featuring simple diagonal stripes in dual colours. Vibe: Casual elegance. Perfect for daily wear sarees or kurtas. Popular Colours: Pink and White, Blue and White.
2. Mothara (The Checkered Wave)
When the Leheriya stripes cross each other to form small diamond shapes, it is called Mothara. The tiny un-dyed spot in the center looks like a pearl (moth). Vibe: Sophisticated and intricate. Styling Tip: A Mothara saree with a pearl necklace is a match made in heaven.
3. Gota Patti Leheriya
When the simple wave pattern is embellished with gold or silver Gota borders and motifs. Vibe: Festive and Wedding-ready. Styling Tip: This is the quintessential "Teej" or "Gangaur" festival look.
4. Pachrangi (Five Colours)
Paach means five. This vibrant pattern features five different colours in a single stripe sequence. Colours: Usually Yellow, Red, Green, Blue, and Orange. Vibe: Joyful and energetic.
5. Satrangi (Seven Colours)
Similar to Pachrangi, but with the seven colours of the rainbow. Vibe: Bold and dramatic.
6. Shaded Leheriya (Ombre)
A modern twist where the colours blend into each other, creating a soft gradient effect instead of sharp lines. Vibe: Contemporary and chic.
7. Indigo Leheriya
Using natural indigo dyes to create blue and white waves. Vibe: Earthy and sustainable. Perfect for office wear.
Caring for Leheriya
- Bleeding: Authentic tie-dye often bleeds colour in the first few washes. Always dry clean.
- Ironing: Leheriya fabric (especially Georgette) can shrink if ironed with water or steam. Iron on low heat when completely dry.
